Privacy policy – Nzhoopsbets

An information site about basketball and other betting in New Zealand needs little personal data, and Nzhoopsbets collects only that little. The Privacy Act 2020 applies, with the information privacy principles in section 22.

Responsible agency

The body that operates Nzhoopsbets is the agency responsible for personal information gathered through it. Name, address and e-mail address are given at hoopsbetsnz.com, and all questions on personal information use that same route.

What is collected

Whenever a page is opened, the server writes a log entry containing the IP address, date and time, the address requested, the amount of data sent, the referring page and the browser type. These logs support security and abuse detection, and are deleted or cut down after 90 days so they point to no person. Writing to the editors adds a name, an e-mail address and the message text, used only for the answer. The site has no reader accounts, deposits or bets, so payment details and identity documents are not collected.

Why, and under which principles

Purposes are lawful and tied to running the site: keeping it working and secure, replying to messages and, after a banner choice, measuring the audience (IPP 1). People are told what is collected and why (IPP 3), and the information serves only those purposes (IPP 10). No decisions are automated and no profiles are built.

Providers and disclosure abroad

Information is not sold. It reaches providers that host the site, deliver content and handle e-mail, and public authorities when the law requires. Where a provider stores data outside New Zealand, disclosure abroad happens only if the recipient has comparable safeguards or the person has been told and agrees, as IPP 12 provides.

Security and keeping

Reasonable safeguards protect against loss and misuse (IPP 5). Information is kept only as long as the purpose needs (IPP 9): server logs for no more than 90 days, correspondence until the matter is closed and for the time possible claims need. A notifiable privacy breach, one that has caused or is likely to cause serious harm, goes to the Privacy Commissioner and to those affected.

Access and correction

Any person may ask for access to information held about them (IPP 6) and for correction (IPP 7). The reply comes as soon as reasonably practicable, at the latest within 20 working days of the request (section 40).

Complaints

A person who believes their privacy has been breached may complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.
